The same path as always, but in the dark — and suddenly everything feels a little magical and a little exciting at the same time.

June is the ideal month for a night walk: it stays light late, the temperature is pleasant, and nature is at its most alive. Wait until it starts getting dark — around half past nine or ten — and head outside.
Pick a familiar route: through the neighbourhood, along a field, through a nearby stretch of woods. Give each child a torch or headlamp. Ask them to listen: which animals can you hear? What do you notice that you never see in daylight? Bats, owls, fireflies if you're lucky.
For young children there's a threshold — the dark can feel scary. But that small tension, shared and overcome and then safely home, is exactly what makes this one of those adventures that lasts. Make it a summer tradition.
