About this activity

Children who learn to photograph look at the world differently. The final result doesn't matter — it's the moment they learn to look through a viewfinder and decide: this is worth keeping.

Give each child a device: a cheap disposable camera, an old smartphone, even an iPad. Give them a simple brief that runs for the whole summer. Ideas: 'photograph ten things that are small', 'photograph ten things that make you happy', or simply 'ten photos you think are beautiful'.

At the end of the summer, print the best ones — one per child — and put them up. Or make a small book. It's remarkable what children see that we miss: the texture of a paving stone, the colour of soup in a bowl, the way light falls through a curtain.
